GETTING READY

What most applications ask for

Every embassy has its own list; these are the papers almost all of them start with.

Your passport

Valid well beyond your trip, with free pages for the visa.

Photographs

Recent, and in the size the embassy asks for.

Supporting papers

Bank statements, letters and bookings, in the order they are asked for.

The application form

Filled in completely, and signed where it should be.

TIMING

When to start

Processing times change with the country and the season. As a rough guide:

Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore

Nearby Asia

Start three to four weeks before you fly.

East Asia

Japan and Korea

Start four to six weeks before you fly.

USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Europe

Long-haul

Start two to three months ahead; appointment dates can be weeks away.

AVOID DELAYS

Why applications get held up

Most delays come down to one of these. We check for them before your file goes in.

Names that do not match

The name on the ticket, the forms and the passport must be spelt the same way.

Unclear bank papers

Statements that are out of date or missing the bank's stamp.

Wrong photographs

The wrong size, an old picture, or a background the embassy does not accept.

A passport running out

Too little validity left, or too few blank pages.

Missing pages

One document left off the checklist sends the whole file back.

Starting too late

No appointment free before the date you meant to fly.

QUESTIONS

About visas

01Can you guarantee a visa?

No one can: the decision is the embassy's. What we can do is make sure the file is complete and correct, which is what most refusals come down to.

02How early should I start?

As early as you can. Appointment dates and processing times vary by country and season.

03Can you book the flight and the visa together?

Yes. Many embassies want to see a flight booking, and we can arrange both at the same desk.

04What is VFS?

VFS Global runs visa application centres for many embassies. You book a date there to hand in your file and give fingerprints; we find and book the date for you.

05Can I apply for a family member?

We can prepare the file for them, but the applicant usually has to attend the appointment in person.
